Lab Testing

Do you want a “leave no stone unturned” assessment of your health that extends beyond standard bloodwork? If so, this is the panel to discuss with your naturopathic doctor. The profile includes:

1. The CardioMetabolic Profile – A healthy metabolism reduces the risk of virtually every chronic illness we know of…this is a way to check in on yours.

    a. Inflammatory markers (e.g. hsCRP, homocysteine, lipoprotein phospholipase A2 (PLAC) activity, etc.)

    b. Metabolic health markers (e.g. fasting insulin, leptin, 1,5-Anhydroglucitol [“Glycomark”], etc.)

    c. Cardiovascular health markers (e.g. lipoprotein a, oxidized LDL, Apo B:Apo A-1 ratio, etc.)

2. The Gastrointestinal Profile – How healthy is your gut?

    a. Probiotic levels (i.e. are your levels of “good bugs” up to par?)

    b. Pathogenic microbial levels (e.g. any overgrowth of yeast, parasites, or bad bacteria?)

    c. Intestinal permeability assessment (i.e. do you have a “leaky gut”?)

    d. Intestinal health markers (e.g. markers of digestion, gut inflammation, intestinal immune function, etc.)

3. The “Toxic Load” Profile – Has your body accumulated any environmental impurities over time?

    a. Heavy metal levels (e.g. lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.)

    b. Environmental chemical levels (e.g. organophosphates, phthalates, benzenes…and many other agents no one can easily pronounce).

    c. Glyphosate (i.e. the active component of a popular weed killer, which is potentially linked to certain health issues)

4. The Detoxification Profile – How efficiently can your body deal with the toxins listed above?

    a. Oxidative damage to DNA and RNA (i.e. 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine levels)

    b. Methylation markers (e.g. S-adenosylmethionine, cystathionine, etc.)

    c. Antioxidant capacity (e.g. glutathione, vitamin E, vitamin C, etc.)

5. The Nutritional Profile – Are your nutrient levels on track?

    a. Vitamin levels (e.g. vitamin D, intracellular vitamin B12, vitamin E, etc.)

    b. Mineral levels (e.g. magnesium, zinc, copper, etc.)

    c. Amino acid levels (e.g. taurine, proline, carnitine, etc.)

6. The Mitochondrial Health Profile – Mitochondria produce the cellular energy – ATP – that runs everything in the body…as you might guess, they’re pretty important

7. The Genomic (“DNA”) Profile – We all have genetic susceptibilities. Knowing about them can help us to determine where to best bolster your health

8. The Hormone Profile – Healthy hormone levels impact energy, motivation, strength, longevity and so much more

    a. Sex hormone levels (e.g. estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, etc.)

    b. Thyroid hormone levels (e.g. T4, anti-thyroid antibodies, reverseT3, etc.)

    c. Adrenal gland hormones (e.g. cortisol, DHEA, etc.)

9. The “Biological Age” Profile – Measuring the length of telomeres – the “caps” on the ends of our DNA strands – gives insight into whether we’re aging in the healthiest way.

You’re dedicated to optimizing your health and you want to make sure nothing is holding you back? You get excited when you hear about the latest and greatest in biohacking? If so, talk to your naturopathic doctor about using this profile to assess the main factors that impact your metabolism and performance.

1. The CardioMetabolic Profile – A healthy cardiovascular system, blood sugar regulation and control of inflammatory factors is an important foundation for a healthy metabolism

    a. Inflammatory markers (e.g. hsCRP, homocysteine, lipoprotein phospholipase A2 (PLAC) activity, etc.)

    b. Metabolic health markers (e.g. fasting insulin, leptin, 1,5-Anhydroglucitol [“Glycomark”], etc.)

    c. Cardiovascular health markers (e.g. lipoprotein a, oxidized LDL, Apo B:Apo A-1 ratio, etc.)

2. The Nutritional Profile – Your metabolism can only thrive if you have all of the necessary fuel in your tank

    a. Vitamin levels (e.g. vitamin D, intracellular vitamin B12, vitamin E, etc.)

    b. Mineral levels (e.g. magnesium, zinc, copper, etc.)

    c. Amino acid levels (e.g. taurine, proline, carnitine, etc.)

3. The Mitochondrial Health Profile – Metabolism is the “sum total of chemical reactions in the body”. Mitochondria produce the cellular energy – ATP – that runs most of those reactions. Therefore, they’re REALLY important.

4. The Hormone Profile – Healthy hormone levels impact energy, motivation, strength, longevity and so much more

    a. Sex hormone levels (e.g. estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, etc.)

    b. Thyroid hormone levels (e.g. T4, anti-thyroid antibodies, reverseT3, etc.)

    c. Adrenal gland hormones (e.g. cortisol, DHEA, etc.)

5. The “Biological Age” Profile – Measuring the length of telomeres – the “caps” on the ends of our DNA strands – gives insight into whether we’re aging in the healthiest way.

Do you refuse to accept that cognitive decline has to happen to you as you get older? Do you have a family history of dementia like Alzheimer’s Disease? If so, talk to your naturopathic doctor about this test panel.

1. The CardioMetabolic Profile – Optimizing blood sugar and blood flow, and reducing inflammation, are all associated with healthier brain physiology

    a. Inflammatory markers (e.g. hsCRP, homocysteine, lipoprotein phospholipase A2 (PLAC) activity, etc.)

    b. Metabolic health markers (e.g. fasting insulin, leptin, 1,5-Anhydroglucitol [“Glycomark”], etc.)

    c. Cardiovascular health markers (e.g. lipoprotein a, oxidized LDL, Apo B:Apo A-1 ratio, etc.)

2. The “Toxic Load” Profile – Has your brain accumulated any environmental impurities over time? If so, they can interfere with brain mitochondrial function and antioxidant levels, both of which are associated with cognitive decline

    a. Heavy metal levels (e.g. lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.)

    b. Environmental chemical levels (e.g. organophosphates, phthalates, benzenes…and many other agents no one can easily pronounce).

3. The Detoxification Profile – How efficiently can your brain deal with the toxins listed above?

    a. Oxidative damage to DNA and RNA (i.e. 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine levels)

    b. Methylation markers (e.g. S-adenosylmethionine, cystathionine, etc.)

    c. Antioxidant capacity (e.g. glutathione, vitamin E, vitamin C, etc.)

4. The Mitochondrial Health Profile – Mitochondria produce the cellular energy – ATP – that runs everything in the body. The human brain utilizes approximately 25% of all of that energy each day. If you want the healthiest brain, it needs healthy mitochondria.

5. The Hormone Profile – Healthy hormone levels impact energy, memory, focus, longevity and so much more

    a. Sex hormone levels (e.g. estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, etc.)

    b. Thyroid hormone levels (e.g. T4, anti-thyroid antibodies, reverseT3, etc.)

    c. Adrenal gland hormones (e.g. cortisol, DHEA, etc.)

6. The “Biological Age” Profile – Measuring the length of telomeres – the “caps” on the ends of our DNA strands – gives insight into whether our brains are aging in the healthiest way

You’re feeling pretty good? You’re not looking to feel superhuman, but you want to maintain a good state of health throughout your life? You’d like some extra testing beyond standard lab tests to make sure you’re on the right track? If so, talk to your naturopathic doctor about these foundational tests.

Do you have chronic digestive issues that no one has been able to figure out yet? Or is your digestion still not quite right, even though you’re doing “everything” right for your gut health already? In either case, ask your naturopathic doctor if this profile is worth exploring for you.

1. Probiotic bacterial levels – are your amounts of “good bacteria” up to par?

2. Large intestine microbe levels (i.e. pathogenic bacteria, yeast and parasites)

3. Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) – we find this is commonly present in patients with diagnoses of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or otherwise unexplained digestive issues

4. Intestinal permeability assessment - do you have a “leaky gut”?

5. Intestinal health markers (e.g. markers of digestion, gut inflammation, intestinal immune function, etc.)

Many authorities on mold illness agree that urine mycotoxin testing is the gold standard laboratory assessment to determine if a patient's body is being affected by mold. This is typically done as a first morning urine collection, after a "provocation" protocol has been implemented the evening before. Please speak with your naturopathic doctor for details.

Our clinic works with several labs that use a variety of methods to determine if an infection is present in a patient's body. Microorganisms that we commonly test for include:

  • Borrelia burgdorferi (the causal bacteria in Lyme Disease)
  • Bartonella
  • Babesia
  • Mycoplasma
  • Chlamydia pneumonia
  • Ehrlichia
  • Anaplasma
  • Viruses (EBV, CMV, HSV, coxsackie, HHV-6)

Some patients do not require a full panel of lab tests to be run. For those patients we commonly run only one or two individual tests at a time (e.g. heavy metal levels, stool testing, metabolomic profile, etc.) Our clinic works with a number of different labs in North America and Europe. If you are interested in a test that is not listed on our website, please email our front desk at [email protected] or speak with your naturopathic doctor to let us know.
