Musculoskeletal Ultrasound/Ultrasound-Guided Injection Therapy

What is musculoskeletal ultrasound?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) involves the use of an ultrasound machine to identify areas of damage or inflammation in muscles, joints, ligaments, nerves and tendons. By visualizing these affected areas we can determine the cause of pain or motor dysfunction with great efficacy.

What does the procedure involve?

MSKUS is completely painless. It involves applying ultrasound gel to the area to be assessed and the ultrasound probe is then moved over key anatomical regions. If desired, patients can see the image during the scan.

What is Ultrasound-Guided Injection Therapy?
When injecting muscles, ligaments, nerves, tendons or joints we can use the ultrasound to visualize the needle as it advances into the tissue. This allows for precise needle placement so treatment can be more exact. Guided injections are commonly employed when doing prolotherapy and platelet-rich plasma therapy.

Which ultrasound system do you use?

We use the Sonosite Edge system. It is equipped with image enhancement technology that allows for optimal visualization for needle guidance and assessing specific tissue types.
